Tien Yang, MBA, MHC-LP — Staff Therapist

  • Meet Tien.

Tien Yang (he/him) is a pre-licensed therapist who holds a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Georgetown University and earned his MBA from Columbia Business School. Before becoming a therapist, Tien’s professional journey included stints on Wall Street, in fashion and retail industries, as well as for the Brooklyn Nets. Along the way, he also worked for his family’s small business and weathered periods of unemployment, stagnation and self-doubt. These experiences have helped him in relating to people from all backgrounds, hearing their stories and working with their challenges and motivations. Tien is an ardent believer in the power of each person’s humanity and their capacity for profound change.

For much of his life, Tien struggled navigating the intricacies of interpersonal relationships as well as his inner world, inadvertently shrinking himself both in his personal life and at work. Years of self-reflection and growth later, he now leads a life of love and connection, and enjoys helping others better understand themselves, connect with the world and beauty around them, and ultimately lead vibrant and inspired lives. During his clinical internship training at Baruch Counseling Center, Tien co-led a process group entitled “Relationship to Self and Others” where he helped adults and teens hone their relational skills to show up more authentically in their own worlds.

Tien’s theoretical orientation is integrative, tailoring his style to fit each client’s needs. He emphasizes empathy, warmth and trust in a client-centered approach, while also drawing on relational approaches, positive psychology, psycho-spiritual perspectives, mindfulness and art therapy. Tien’s style tends to be close and collaborative as he helps clients discover compassion, curiosity and lightness in daily living. As an LGBTQIA+ affirming multicultural counselor, Tien welcomes clients of all identities and is available for work with individuals and couples.
